Might the Cigarette Ban in the UK Force Bingo Players On to the Web?
June 1st, 2025 by Jackson

A lot has been written in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in the UK. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to assist in keeping the industry afloat. However can the internet variation of this classic game provide a reprieve, or will it never compare to its land based peer?

Bingo has been an age old game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game lately had witnessed a recent return in appeal with younger men and women deciding to visit the bingo halls in place of the clubs on a weekend. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the cigarette ban across England and Wales.

No longer will gamblers be able to puff on cigarettes while dabbing numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public areas will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most popular areas where players like to smoke.

The results of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo halls. Players have plunged and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where have the players gone? Obviously they haven’t abandoned this ancient game?

The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can enjoy bingo from their computer while enjoying a beer and smoke and still enjoy massive jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.

Of course playing online will never replace the social portion of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of players the rules have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
