Much has been stated in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry being hurt because of the cigarette ban in Britain. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax cuts to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. But can the internet adaptation of this classic game present a salvation, or might it in no way compare to its land based peer?
Bingo is an established game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game lately had witnessed a recent increase in popularity with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo halls instead of the bars on a weekend. This is all about to change with the enacting of the smoking ban all over Britain.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes while dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public locations will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most common areas where many people enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the business is absolutely fighting for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Surely they haven’t forgotten this familiar game?
The answer is on the net. People are now realizing that they can play bingo from their computer while enjoying a drink and cig and in the end, have a chance at massive cash rewards. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the internet can never replace the social part of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little option.
