Much has been stated in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the anti smoking law in the United Kingdom. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive aid to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. But can the internet adaptation of this quintessential game offer a salvation, or will it never compare to its real life peer?
Bingo has been an enduring game historically enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. In any case the game recently had seen a recent comeback in appeal with younger members of society deciding to go to the bingo halls in place of the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to change with the introduction of the anti smoking law throughout Britain.
No longer will players be able to smoke at the same time marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public areas will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favorite locations where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the industry is absolutely fighting for its life. But where did all the players go? Of course they have not given up on this familiar game?
The answer is on the web. People realise that they can bet on bingo from their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy monstrous jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the net is unlikely to replace the social portion of going down to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the governing edicts have left a lot of bingo players with no alternative.
